Art has the power to transcend age, telling stories that are both unique and universal. The Whirlwind of Wonders exhibition at ‘Our Tampines Hub’, part of the ‘Think! Contemporary Primary School Exhibition series’ by Singapore Art Museum is a testament to the boundless creativity and imagination of young minds. In this blog post, I want to share our experience exploring the exhibition, where I had the privilege of witnessing our son’s artwork showcased together with other brilliant pieces.
A few days ago, my son showed me the artwork below and mentioned that he had drawn our family while we were in front of Legoland Malaysia. He expressed that this represented his memorable moment from our visit to Legoland. Additionally, he shared that if his drawing is selected, it will be featured in an exhibition.
A few days later, he told me that his artwork had been selected and is now included in an exhibit. He asked me to take him to see the exhibition at Our Tampines Hub, a shopping mall in Tampines.
Well, then last Saturday we went to Our Tampines Hub to view the exhibition.
The More We Get Together
The exhibit from his school is named as ‘The More We Get Together’.
And, we located our son’s artwork!

The Mama Shop Photobooth
The next exhibit from his school is this monochrome Mama Shop photobooth. It is also a tribute to Singapore’s Heritage.
In Singapore, a “Mama shop” is a colloquial term for a small convenience store or neighborhood grocery store. These shops are typically family-owned and operated, offering a variety of daily essentials, snacks, and sometimes cooked food items. The term “Mama shop” is derived from the Malay word “Mama,” which means mother. These shops have been an integral part of the local community, providing residents with quick access to basic necessities.
While this Mama Shop Photobooth is a collaborative effort, my son proudly pointed to specific artworks, indicating his contributions. It seems like he takes great pride in the exhibit that he and his schoolmates created.
Colouring Activities
This exhibition also encouraged young artists to engage in colouring activities. All the colour pencils and drawings were provided. Kids engaged in colouring the sheets including my son.

We also ended our exhibition tour by visiting the nearby McDonald’s outlet and treating the child to his favorite Happy Meal. 🙂

In the states, the local Mama shop is called a “Mom and Pop” store, where mostly groceries are sold.

Dear Amila, this looks like a really great exhibition and your son is rightly proud that he was able to take part in it with his beautiful work. The Mama Shop Photobooth is also a nice idea. In our neighboring country Germany, such shops are called Tante-Emma-Laden” (= “Aunt Emma Shop”). In Austria they are simply called “Greissler” (Greissler/Greisslerei corresponds in meaning to the English word pair grocer/grocery). I enjoyed accompanying you through the exhibition. (By the way, I’m very curious about Singapore – because if everything goes well, we’ll have the opportunity to get to know this city-state in person next year for a few days…)

It is so exciting that your son’s artwork made it into the exhibit. Congratulations to him and to you also. You must be proud. When I was 10, something I made was picked for an exhibit, and I still remember that. I bet your son will remember this also. And I like how they did a whole exhibit for the young artists. It’s a good idea to encourage children and to celebrate what they do. I also bet he liked his Happy Meal too. Interesting to learn about the mama shop. Thank you for explaining what it is. We have a little grocery corner shop near me. I buy something there when I have forgotten something. But mostly I shop in large supermarkets in town. I can do this as I have a car. But many older people here don’t drive (or don’t have a car) so they have to shop in the village. We have several small grocery shops and there is a weekly market.
