Train Birthday Party for Our Son’s 2nd Birthday

Few months ago our son celebrated his 2nd birthday. Actually he celebrated his 2nd birthday on last year October and still I couldn’t post any details of it. My blog is called ‘Diary of a New Mom’, but my diary is always outdated. 🙂 Anyway, late is better than never. So, this post will still have some value when he is grown up.

Train Birthday Party

Sanu is Two!

He celebrated his 2nd birthday in October last year. It was really busy and stressful period at our home. My mother arrived here from Sri Lanka and helped me on weaning. We started weaning him from breastfeeding, but my son was not happy. 🙁 He tried his best to get his favourite ‘breast milk’.

Although his actual birthday was on October, we had to celebrate it few days before as we had plans to visit Sri Lanka for a holiday. I wanted to have a small celebration as I was not sure on how our days would be in Sri Lanka. Visiting Sri Lanka is always enjoyable as we can stay with family members. But, on the other way it is really tiresome. We travel from one place to another. No proper stay at any home. So, I planned to have a birthday celebration in Singapore before we leave as I can’t predict how it would be in Sri Lanka.

This time our birthday theme was train birthday. My son loves Bob the Train songs YouTube channel (Kids TV), so we could easily select the theme.

DIY Train Birthday Party for 2 Year old

I love DIY birthday parties. So, most of the banners were done by me and I always involved my son with me when I was doing those crafts. One of the best ways to teach arts and crafts for toddlers! 🙂

Below is the Birthday banner for this train themed Birthday party. This DIY Train birthday banner is really easy to make when you have beautiful and colourful papers.

I have a plan of making a photo album for our son using his 5 years photos,so I capture a photo each month and I guess birthday is a good reason to print all the monthly photos.

Below is a simple birthday cake done by me.Actually I bought few decorated pieces of cakes from a nearby bakery shop and made this train birthday cake.A toy train engine completed the look of the birthday cake.

Actually this was just a family celebration which we didn’t have any guests. So,we didn’t want a big Birthday cake.

Here is the tutorial for this easy train Birthday Cake.

Anyway,I still bought another small cake for the sake of cutting as I wanted to keep the Train Birthday cake few more minutes just to admire its beauty. 🙂

An easy food garnishing for the train birthday party

He looks bit tired as few days before the celebration,he fell down on the floor and ended up with four stitches on his chin. 🙁 In these photos,he is still with his stitches.

Anyway, our train birthday party is not yet over.We visited Sri Lanka at the end of September and we were there on his actual date of birth.(His birthday falls on the first week of October) My mother arranged a Birthday party at home inviting few kids in our neighborhood. It was a great opportunity for our son to play and mingle with some kids in Sri Lanka. My mother,as she left Singapore just before few days of our flight took some of the banners from the party saying she doesn’t have enough time to shop for birthday party supplies. On the other way,we could use most of the birthday supplies twice!

So here are some moments from the Train Birthday Party we had in Sri Lanka.Sadly, photos are not so clear and most of the photos with the kids are shaky.I could pick few photos anyhow.

Although we celebrate his birthdays with a party,we don’t forget to join with good causes.

This time we visited an elderly home near to our home (Sri Lanka) with some donations. We also offered tea party for the elders who reside there. It was a good time for us to spend time with them.

DIY Toddler Reading Corner

A reading corner is a great place for any toddler to spend time on his own by reading books alone. Our son has a specific place to keep his books, but he didn’t have a specific place to read. We read books together in bedroom, on the sofa or even sitting on the floor.

Now, as a toddler he showed interest in looking at the books alone. I heard he was creating stories around the illustrations of the books. So, isn’t this the right time to create a separate space for him to read books?

reading corner for a toddler

I thought that would be interesting if I create a reading corner for him. A reading corner would be a great place which encourages a toddler to read books. I was right. He was so excited when I was creating a special place for him to read.

Anyway, I didn’t do any fancy design change for his kids room. Instead I did some changes in the arrangement for his nursery room. Actually when he turned 1 year old, we didn’t use his nursery room much. When he turned 2 years old, I started changing his baby nursery room into a kids play room. So, this reading corner is one of the projects we carried out on our way creating a kids room for him.

Easy DIY Reading corner for toddler

This is a pretty simple idea. I used his foam play mat for the reading corner. Previously we used this play mat to keep him sitting and playing. But now as a toddler, he runs around the home and he doesn’t use the play mat much. Instead he likes to use a table for most of his activities. So, this reading area is a great way for us to re-purpose foam play mat.

I bought 3 new pillow cases which are colorful and with kids friendly animal character prints on it. My son loved those pillow cases and I used some pillow inserts to make kids friendly cushions. So those are his cushions in the new reading corner.

I also bought a wall display with numbers to decorate the wall. So, he can learn counting too. Instead of creating a space for keeping all his books, I only kept a small box with few books. So, I can rotate the books. If he wants, he can always take books from his usual book shelf.

Easy DIY Reading corner for toddler

Once I created this reading corner, my son was really happy. Now it is around 3 months after I making a separate space for him. Still he loves the place and he reads books and even asks me to read books there with him.

That is what I wanted before making the reading corner for our toddler son!  🙂

How to Create Custom Prints Using your Own Family Photography

With digital cameras and even with mobile phone cameras, taking photographs is not a big task as it was some years ago. Having a baby or kids at home means you are completely busy with capturing photos of their moments. How do you organize these photos? I usually create photo albums using the photos of the year or photos of the special moments. Other than that, I found creating custom prints is another way to use family photos as memories.

A canvas print with beautiful family photo will be a great addition to your empty wall of the home. Even you can change the photo each year and see how your family grows and how your family members change in their look each year. Well, I print family photos each year and frame those. Instead I found canvas prints as a great way to create beautiful banners.

DIY New Year Party Hat for Toddlers

Today we spent few hours making some simple items for New Year celebrations. This year my son is 2 years old and he enjoys celebrations. Few months ago we celebrated his 2nd Birthday, although he didn’t have much idea on his simple birthday party on the day we celebrated, he started imaginary playing with birthday parties after few weeks of the party. So, that time I decided to do some activities focusing him for the New Year.

Today, 31st of December, I told him about the New Year. He understands it is something to celebrate and he is ready to welcome the New Year with his soft toys.

This is a simple party hat we both made. Although it is easier to buy party hats, DIY items are always good to engage with a toddler. So, I decided to spend few minutes and to create this New Year Party hat.

We used simple supplies which we found at home.

Things needed:
• cardstock paper
• tape
• stapler
• glue stick
• scissors
• Pen
• Paper punch as required

First we made confetti using colourful strips of paper. You can also use a paper punch to make circles to add to the collection of confetti.
I used an A4 size paper for the party hat.

First I  wrote the greeting ‘Happy New Year’.

We decorated this paper using the confetti.

Then I used tape and staple to make a cone using the decorated paper.

Finally cut the edges of the party hat and make it round shape.

It is really simple and easy.
This is a few minute project to make a toddler happy when they are bit bored.

My son decided to use the party hat on his teddy bear. 🙂

DIY Kids Art Display Without Damaging the Walls

I’ve seen many beautiful kids’ artwork display ideas over web. This is one of such ideas and I adapted this method after seen many posts over Pinterest and other blogs.

However this artwork display line needs no brain. It is so simple and easy to create a line and hang the art work.

My son still doesn’t start his play group. But he enjoys some painting activities with me at home. As these drawings and artwork are his first drawings, I like to keep those protected. He will admire these drawings one day!

art work display ideas

Other than displaying his artwork, I also want to train him to keep his drawings organized. Now he knows where to keep his drawings after he finished those.

kids art work display ideas

Here are the items which I used to create this artwork display line.

You Need:

A ribbon
Self-adhesive hooks/ Self-adhesive wall hangers(Command Hooks)
Wooden pegs

kids art work display ideas

Method:

Simply stick the two wall hangers on the wall you want the display line. I used Self-adhesive wall hangers , so I don’t want to damage the wall. Then tie the ribbon and create a line. (Similar to clothes line)
Hang wooden pegs and when there is a finished art, simply hang it using wooden pegs.
A simple and easy artwork display line is ready for kids arts.

Why I like to use Command Hooks?

I always use command hooks,(Self-adhesive hooks/ Self-adhesive wall hangers) to my wall decorations and displays.Simply, these are great hangers to display anything in few minutes. You dont need to have skills to drill the wall.Even you dont need to damage the wall.Simply stick the command hooks on to the wall and you have  a nice wall hanger.

There are also different styles and sizes available. For simple hanging like this kids artwork display,I always use beautiful command hooks. These are not much expensive too.You can also check these similar Command Medium Hooks

Do you use these Command hooks to hang things on the wall?

Hand Prints and Play Time

we had a great time with these hand prints.Recently we experimented with leaf printing and it was such a fun activity for my son. So,this is our next experiment with hand prints.

My son loved playing with paints. We used water colours,so the prints are not so dark or sharp.

Hand Prints and Play Time

Finally,he didn’t like his dirty hands 🙂

Hand Prints and Play TimeAs we used water colours,it was easy to wash within few minutes.

DIY Train Birthday Banner

I really like to have DIY Birthday banners than buying it. Simply, I am able to match the Birthday Banner with the party theme. We already celebrated our son’s 2nd Birthday and this time we picked the theme as ‘Train Birthday’. So everything from Birthday Cake to decorations is with the train theme.I had interesting time creating most of the decorations and Train Birthday Cake.My son really loved his train Birthday party!

DIY Train Birthday Banner

DIY Train Birthday Banner

For the banner, I came up with this idea as a DIY train birthday banner. It was really easy to create this. You will only need few different colour papers and printed letters. Other supplies are like scissors and glue are also needed.

Here is how I finished this DIY train birthday banner. If you are throwing a train themed Birthday party, this idea may be helpful.

You need,
Colourful papers from different colours
Printed letters which says your message
A pair of scissors
Glue
A ribbon
Punch

Here is how we made this DIY Train Birthday banner.

First cut colour papers into squares of the size you want your train themed birthday banner.

Also cut rectangles from another colour.(As shown in photos)

Also cut the letters from the printed paper.

DIY Train Birthday Banner

Using a color combination, paste rectangles on the square shapes.

Then paste letters accordingly.

Finaly cut small circles to pretend the wheels of the train.Paste those on the squares.(Wagons of the train)

DIY Train Birthday Banner

You will have beautiful set of letter wagons of the train.

DIY Train Birthday BannerPunch holes on each squares and thread a ribbon through each to make it as a birthday banner.

DIY Train Birthday Banner

Now,wagons of the train banner is ready. We need the train engines.

Using few colour papers,I simply cut the engine shape.Actualy I didnt use any template.

Then I used anothe colour squares, rectangles and circles to create the windows and wheels of the 3 engines.

DIY Train Birthday Banner

Finally,we pasted those engines on the wall and our Train Birthday banner was ready for the party!
