In July 21st, Singapore celebrates racial Harmony Day. As a multi-cultural city where people live in harmony, this day is one of the best days to admire the culture of different ethnic groups live in Singapore. As usual my kid’s Preschool too organized activities to celebrate the racial harmony day! Below are some moments from this year Racial Harmony day celebrated in preschool including the different activities!
Check this post on previous year Racial Harmony Day and other details such as what is racial harmony day.
As usual my kid went to school with his costume that represents Sri Lanka. Although it is exactly not the national dress of Sri Lanka, this Batik Sarong and shirt represents traditional costumes of the country. Therefore I chose it for my kid to wear for the Racial Harmony Day.
All the kids came to the school with their own traditional dresses. Other than the kids, parents too joined with traditional costumes representing their origin country or ethnic group.
Learn Indian Dance
The celebration started with Indian dance activity which was really interesting. One lady taught basic steps for Indian dancing and she could make all the kids excited!
Learn about traditional Malay Music instruments.
After the Indian dance events kids got the opportunity to learn about Malay music instruments such as ‘KOMPANG’.Kompang reminds me the ‘Sri Lankan Rabana’ or ‘Ath Rabana’ which is almost similar to this instrument. The best part was that kids got the chance to play Kompang!
Enjoy traditional food
After learning about Kompang, kids had a short break to enjoy their snacks. On this day kids received snacks from the school which represents foods from different ethnic groups of Singapore. Some Chinese snacks, Malay snacks and Indian snacks were there.
Talk about racial harmony day
It is important that kids learn about the importance of living in harmony. Kids listened to a speech delivered by a Parent Support Group member about the history of Racial Harmony day and its importance.
After the speech, kids went to the front as groups to show their traditional costumes that represents their culture and ethnic group.
Racial Harmony Day Booth
Finally we entered into the racial harmony day booth that shows activities and details related to each ethnic group. Indian booth, Chinese booth and Malay booth were there showcasing different items from their own culture.
At the Indian booth, kids could have a henna art drawn in their hands.
At the Chinese booth, kids learned to write Chinese characters.
It was a memorable day which connected all of the kids and parents.
I am sure these are not only suitable for preschoolers as Racial Harmony Day activities, these are also suitable for all ages including kids and adults to learn about other cultures.
