5 Steps In Opening Up Your Meditation Space

If you want to make meditation a part of your daily routine, then it helps to have a space that is physically dedicated to it. Of course that means you need to choose such an area, clear it out, and recreate it for the specific purpose of meditation. It can be an area of any particular size that suits you.

If you are fortunate enough, you might get to dedicate an entire room of your house to meditation. However, most folks use smaller areas or anything that is available, such as a home office, a laundry closet, an extra bedroom, or even their garage. If you want to set up your own meditation space, follow these 5 steps:

 1) Pick A Spot:

 Don’t overthink this or get too choosy. Pick any small yet comfortable area within your home that you can access easily. It should have a source of good lighting, proper ventilation, and control over the temperature. If the space has a window or is near it, block out hard sunlight with solar shades. A HEPA air purifier is a good idea to take care of stagnant local atmosphere or poor air quality. If your local climate or seasonal weather is cold, then be sure the room has enough warmth for you to relax comfortably. If you are from somewhere warmer then the garden can be a good place.

2) Make The Spot Free Of Distractions:

 Any electronics in this space need to be turned off while you meditate. This starts with cell phones, but also includes dishwashers, laundry timers, coffee makers, or any other electronic device or appliance that might prove to be a source of noise. Get rid of or cover up any work that visibly needs to be done, be it laundry, a stack of bills, or just your to-do list. You need free your space of work possibilities and possible interruptions that your ears might pick up. A do-not-disturb sign on the closed door lets other occupants of your home know that you’re busy not being busy.

 3) Clean The Space Often:

 If you want to clear your mind, you need to first clear the space where you hope to do this. You should have already addressed clutter, but make sure you also deal with any remaining mess, down to dirt and dust. Sweep, vacuum, or dust mop regularly in order to keep the room pristine and welcoming. If the area is outside then ensure it’s neat and tidy too.  4) Let The Area Inspire You:

 Your personal choices come into play here. You might take the simple route when you figure out how to make the room beautiful, as you could just go with a vibrantly colored or patterned mat for sitting, or you could get more elaborate and decorate the space with pictures, frames of inspirational quotes, fresh flowers or other plants, and candles.  5) Make Yourself Comfortable:

 Make sure your space can support you physically during your meditation. Pillows and bolsters with your mat, or even a comfy chair, are good ideas. Some individuals find it easier to meditate comfortably while warm, so have a shawl, scarf, or large blanket handy.

It is really exciting, fun and wonderful way to keep our son calm and happy. As he is still a toddler of 2 years plus in age, at the beginning I found it is bit difficult to keep him practicing in a pose. Instead he changed yoga poses as he likes. Most of the time he uses his favorite toys in both hands saying they all are practicing yoga!

But, that’s fine. Mini Me Yoga is all about creating exciting and cheerful environment for kids while introducing mindfulness and yoga poses. I continued practicing yoga each day without worrying about his eagerness of practicing yoga with his friendly toys.

Meditation time was really exciting for me. As a Buddhist, I really like to introduce meditation practices for my son, but previously I thought it is still too early. Surprisingly he loved the meditation pose and Oom sound together with breathing exercise. He loves to send positive vibes to his playgroup friends while practicing yoga at home.

Well, he first sends positive thoughts to his toys. That is how we practiced yoga at our home while teaching kindness and compassion to my toddler with easy yoga poses for kids.

When it comes to photos, I have super shaky and not so nice photos. But with these photos you can imagine how active and cheerful my son is when we practice yoga!
